Types of masks

At this point, after several months living with masks in our daily lives, you may be familiar with the different types of masks that exist, but many people have doubts about which ones are more effective, which ones are recommended to take, if any type of mask is worth. or not, etc.

You turn on the television or read any means of communication and hear about surgical masks, filter masks, cloth masks, FFP masksAnd including brand masks or fashionable to match your outfit. Therefore, in the following article we are going to give you an overview of the different types of masks that exist on the market, their characteristics and which are the best to prevent Covid, according to health authorities.

Main types of masks

- Surgical or medical masks: the initial use of these types of masks was that during a surgical operation, the doctor did not contaminate the patient and also protected himself from splashes or viruses. They are the masks that we now find in pharmacies and the most recommended by health authorities with an effectiveness of 98%, in addition to being the cheapest.

Surgical masks are loose, disposable face masks that cover the nose, mouth, and chin. They protect the user from aerosols, splashes and large particle droplets and also prevent the transmission of potentially infectious respiratory secretions to others.

Surgical masks can vary in design, but the mask itself is often flat and rectangular in shape with pleats. The top of the mask contains a metal strip that can form on the nose.

Elastic bands or long, straight ties help keep the surgical mask in place while you wear it. You can wear the elastic bands behind your ears or behind your head.

- FFP masks: there are different types of FFP masks: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 depending on their effectiveness. The FFP2 and FFP3 have more than 90%, so it perfectly prevents against Covid. However, are specifically recommended for healthcare personnel or people who will come into close contact with the breathing of an infected patient, or for certain jobs where the person can breathe toxic, dust and chemical particles. They are not necessary for the general population, since there are surgical masks that do the same function. They act as a protective barrier in both directions and can be reusable.

- N95 masksEquivalent to European FFP2s, these types of masks began to be marketed during the first months of the Covid pandemic given the shortage of surgical masks. Technically they are considered or called respirators, and are named for their ability to filter 95% of the particles. The N95s are tight and have to be tested for each person. Once fitted correctly, the mask must be snug against the face creating an airtight seal against the skin without the possibility of leaks, which makes it safe but also very uncomfortable for the general public, even making breathing difficult. Therefore, like the FFP2 and FFP3, these masks are recommended for healthcare personnel and in certain specific jobs exposed to toxins, but not for people on the street in their day to day, being surgical masks recommended for the general public.

- Cloth masks: they were a very feasible solution at the beginning of the pandemic, especially when there were not enough surgical masks and many people opted for these types of homemade masks. Over time, cloth masks are sold everywhere, and many people buy and use them because they are more aesthetic and reusable. However, They are not approved, many do not have a filter and do not have the required protection efficiency to obtain the certificate of bacterial protection, that is, greater than 90%. An alternative option is to place a renewable filter inside, so that the cloth mask would be a cover that covers the approved filter that does serve as a barrier.
