Coronavirus testing

As we all know, Covid is a virus that causes an infectious disease. This disease is considered a pandemic given its global reach. Although the fatality is not high, the contagion is extremely high, as well as the sequelae that it can leave in some people. This causes the health authorities to have decreed the mandatory nature of the surgical masks, that social contact between groups of people is avoided to avoid contagion and coronavirus tests are carried out among possible contagion suspects to avoid the spread of the disease.

Because most people with COVID-19 experience moderate, even mild, and even asymptomatic symptoms, it is difficult to determine who is sick or not. For this, different types of coronavirus tests have been developed to detect it.

Types of coronavirus tests available for the detection of SARS-CoV-2

Although various laboratories and governments throughout the world are working together and at accelerated steps to develop a vaccine, it is a solution that is still far away. The development of vaccines takes years, and although there are countries that assure that they will have it ready in the following months, the best measure is still prevention. And at the same time, the coronavirus detection tests, in order to identify the affected people and prevent the spread and new infections.

Two types of coronavirus tests for the detection of Covid that are currently available in addition to rapid tests. One of them is the viral test and the other is an antibody test, both of which are performed using different protocols and different sophisticated laboratory equipment.

Coronavirus PCR testing: This is a molecular test that detects the genetic material of the virus by PCR (polymerase chain reaction). To do this, a sample of saliva, nasal fluid or throat is collected using a swab. Depending on the type of laboratory, the results may be ready immediately or take a few days. It is an accurate test and the most highly recommended.

Coronavirus ELISA tests: This is a test that detects specific proteins of the virus. As with the previous one, a swab is used to collect a sample from the nose or throat and the results will be ready even in minutes.

This type of test is also cheaper than PCR tests and is usually applied to large groups of people. The only downside is that despite its accuracy, sometimes false negatives are obtained, which means that the result will indicate that you do not have the virus, but you are actually infected. For this reason, it is recommended to do it in conjunction with the PCR.

Quick tests: these coronavirus tests consist of extracting a drop of blood, from a prick on the patient's finger, to apply the blood to the reagent, which shows the result after 10 or 15 minutes. If it is positive in Covid it is confirmed that the person is infected by the virus. If the result is negative, a second PCR test will be necessary to confirm or not the negative.

These tests are not accurate at all, so many times later a PCR must be done to confirm it.

Who should get tested for coronavirus for COVID-19?

  • If you have symptoms of the disease (fever, cough, sore throat, etc.)
  • If you had close contact with someone you know has COVID-19.
  • If you are a health worker who is in contact with patients infected with coronavirus.
  • If your local health department has asked you to take a coronavirus test for SARS-CoV-2

While you are waiting for the results of the coronavirus tests, it is preferable that you isolate yourself at home and follow the recommendations of the health personnel.

What happens if I test positive or negative for coronavirus?

If it is positive, you must follow the instructions of your doctor or the health authorities to take care of yourself and to protect the other people around you, especially confinement and isolation at home for 15 days. On the other hand, if the result is negative, it is very possible that you were not infected at the time of the coronavirus tests. In any case, you must continue to take all precautions to protect yourself and others, such as social distance and the use of a mask.
